HYPOALLERGENIC FLOORING

What flooring is hypoallergenic?

In general, we recommend wool carpet, linoleum, tile or hardwood flooring instead. These flooring types are easy to clean and don't trap any dust or allergens. If you have pets, be sure to choose a tile that is scratch-resistant, as this will help prevent them from scratching the surface.

Hypoallergenic carpeting

While wall-to-wall carpeting is generally discouraged for severe allergy sufferers, certain types of low-allergen carpets and area rugs can still be a viable option.

  • Low-pile carpet: Short, dense fibers trap fewer allergens than plush carpets and are easier to clean thoroughly.

  • Low-VOC and Green Label certified: Look for carpets with certifications from organizations like the Carpet and Rug Institute's (CRI) Green Label program, which indicates low chemical emissions.

  • Washable area rugs: A hybrid approach is to install hard surface flooring and add washable area rugs for comfort. These can be easily laundered to remove dust mites and other allergens.

  • Hypoallergenic fiber materials: Some synthetic and natural fibers are better for allergy sufferers.

    • Wool: This natural fiber has antimicrobial properties and helps absorb air contaminants.

    • Nylon and polyester: These synthetic options are moisture-resistant and easier to clean than other materials.

Maintenance is key

Regardless of the flooring type you choose, regular maintenance is essential to minimize allergens.

  • Vacuum with a HEPA filter: Use a vacuum equipped with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter to effectively capture fine dust and allergens.

  • Regular cleaning: Sweep or vacuum hard floors at least once a week. For hard floors, use a damp mop to capture dust instead of just kicking it into the air.

  • Control humidity: Keep your home's humidity level below 50% to inhibit the growth of dust mites and mold.

To choose the best hypoallergenic flooring, look for materials that are non-porous and easy to clean, as these will not trap dust, dander, and other allergens. Options range from hard-surface floors like hardwood and tile to special low-pile, low-VOC carpets.

Hard surface options

Hard surface flooring is generally considered the top choice for people with allergies and asthma because allergens cannot get trapped in fibers.

  • Hardwood flooring: Hardwood provides a smooth, solid surface that is easy to clean with a dust mop or damp mop. For best results, choose a sealed hardwood finish to prevent moisture from absorbing into the wood.

  • Laminate flooring: A budget-friendly alternative to hardwood, laminate is easy to clean and resistant to scratches. Choose low-VOC products to avoid emitting chemicals that can trigger allergies.

  • Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) and Vinyl: Vinyl is non-porous and resistant to moisture, making it an excellent choice for preventing mold and mildew.

  • Tile (Ceramic or Porcelain): Tile has a non-porous surface that is resistant to moisture and does not trap allergens.

  • Cork flooring: Made from natural materials, cork has inherent antimicrobial properties that resist mold, mildew, and bacteria growth.

  • Linoleum: Composed of natural, renewable materials, linoleum is naturally antimicrobial and resists dust and microbes.
