SISAL CARPET

SEAGRASS

Sisal carpet is a hard-wearing, durable, and eco-friendly flooring made from the tough, natural fibres of the agave plant. Known for its rustic, textured look and neutral tones, it is a popular choice for high-traffic areas like hallways, stairs, and living rooms.

Key characteristics

  • Eco-friendly: The fibres are sourced from a renewable and biodegradable plant, and the harvesting process uses minimal pesticides and water.

  • Durable and strong: Sisal fibres are impressively strong and stiff, which makes them highly resistant to wear and tear. This strength is why it is also used for making rope.

  • Textured finish: The natural plant fibres and weaving methods, such as herringbone or boucle, create a distinctive, natural, and earthy texture.

  • Allergy-friendly: As a natural fibre, sisal is non-toxic and doesn't emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It is also known to trap less dust and allergens than synthetic carpets, making it beneficial for allergy sufferers.

  • Natural dehumidifier: Sisal is absorbent and can help regulate the humidity in a room by drawing moisture from the air.

Disadvantages to consider

  • Vulnerable to water staining: Because sisal is so absorbent, it is highly prone to watermarks and staining from spills. It is not suitable for damp areas like bathrooms or kitchens.

  • Can be rough underfoot: The stiff fibres that give sisal its durability also mean it can feel coarse or rough on bare feet, though it softens with time and regular vacuuming.

  • Fading in sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the colours to fade over time.

  • Expansion and contraction: Being hygroscopic, sisal can absorb moisture from the air, causing it to expand and contract. This means it requires professional installation, often using a "double-stick" method, to prevent it from buckling

Cleaning and maintenance

  • Regular vacuuming: It is essential to vacuum regularly to prevent dirt and grit from settling into the fibres, as this can cause premature wear.

  • Address spills immediately: Act quickly to blot any spills with a clean, dry cloth. Never use water-based or steam cleaning, as this will cause staining.

  • Stain protection: Many natural flooring suppliers offer a water-based, non-toxic stain protection treatment that can be applied to create a barrier against spills.

  • Avoid moisture: Never use wet cleaning methods. Instead, a specific dry cleaning powder or kit designed for natural fibres is recommended.
